About the Artist
Merryn MacDonald
I spent my entire childhood in a very art-oriented environment, and was encouraged from an early age to pursue art in any and every medium that was available, including: drawing, painting, woodwork, sewing, textile crafts, jewelry and ceramics. Growing up amongst professional artists and in an art studio gave me unusually early exposure to life-modeling, art history, and to the production of marketable art.
I find inspiration in my surroundings - the simple events of day-to-day life, nature, the many places and cultures observed in the course of my eclectic upbringing. My art reflects my interest in the human and animalistic form, particularly visible in my attempts to capture the motion and expression in all of my subjects. Many of my pieces also reflect the years of my life spent in tropical environments, adding vibrancy and warmth, as well as exotic subjects. I have always had an urge to create, to express my thoughts, feelings, and ideas through art, whether depicting memories, ideas, or figments of my imagination. Much of my work also contains subtle implications designed to impact upon the viewer, whether broadcasting environmental messages, referrencing extinction, pollution, etc. or simply expressing the emotions, grace, liveliness or tranquility of my subjects. I also aim to have a positive impact on the world through my art, illuminating and interpreting the problems I perceive, both on a personal and societal scale, and providing alternate views to both the good and bad sides of life.
